Hydroseed Watering Instructions

Hydroseeding involves spraying a mixture of seeds, mulch, water and other ingredients onto soil to establish lawns or control erosion. Because moisture levels have a big effect on how quickly and successfully hydroseed will grow, knowing how to water the newly planted hydroseed is key!

When watering, make sure to use a light spray setting. You do not want to create overly saturated areas. If you are using sprinklers, make sure the sprinklers can reach the entire area. Be sure to watch for areas where water may be missed or is being pooled. Follow these instructions to the best of your ability to ensure you are happy with the end results.

When is the Best Time to Water?

The best time to water is early in the morning or late evening!

The First Month

The first 14 days of watering are critical! Make sure to water the hydroseed 2 to 4 times per day for the first 30 days to ensure proper germination of the new lawn. The ground where the seed was planted should be wet all day long (make sure that there is no standing water for more than an hour at a time).

Following the First Month

To promote deep root growth, you will need to water the hydroseed less frequently. After the first month, water the hydroseed 2 to 3 times a week.

When to Mow

Do not mow the grass until it is between 3” to 4” high. It typically takes 3 to 4 weeks for this to happen. Make sure your mower is set to remove only the top 1/3 of the grass.

When to Fertilize

Do not fertilize the hydroseed until 30 days after it has been planted. Fertilize the hydroseed when it is relatively dry. Promptly water after the fertilizer is applied. When choosing a fertilizer, look for one that is made for new grass, such as starter fertilizers with slow-release formulas. Once the lawn is established, you can fertilize once every season (except for winter) or three times a year.

Controlling Weeds

For 3 to 4 months following seeding, DO NOT use weed killer on the new hydroseeded lawn! This is very important because the weed killer will kill your new seed. Once the grass is established, you can use weed control products but look for ones that are designed for new grass.
